Justice Antonin Scalia (1936–2016)

My husband is a lawyer, and during law school I remember reading Justice Scalia’s opinions and actually enjoying them. He was witty, funny, sarcastic, and Catholic. If you’ve read even a few legal opinions you will know this is rare. He seemed larger than life, and had the huge Catholic family as well.

Here are some favorite memories of Justice Scalia:

Riding an elephant with Justice Ginsberg in India, 1994.

The infamous St. Thomas More hat, worn
at President Obama’s inauguration, 2013.

And the pancake quote: “In a big family the first child is kind of like the first pancake. If it’s not perfect, that’s OK,” he said. “There are a lot more coming along.”

And this story, which is so touching

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
